Centenary Lookback Series No 3 - 1930's
As part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of C A Duquemin Ltd, we will be carrying out a monthly Facebook lookback over the last 100 years.
By the 1930’s Alfred Duquemin’s business was steadily growing. By 1935 staff numbers were in the 30’s. The wage book below from 1935 shows Cecil Duquemin’s wages at 3 pounds, 8 shillings and 9 pence per week. His annual wage was 173 pounds, 4 shillings and 3 pence.
By 1938 the name of firm had changed to C A Duquemin following the death of Alfred Duquemin. Please also see the newly colourised photo of the firm from 1938. Cecil (Cess) Duquemin is second from the right in the middle row and Malcolm (Mac) Duquemin is the young 14 year old boy in the back row. The two ladies in the middle row are on the left Eva Duquemin (Alfred’s widow) and on the right Doris Duquemin (Cecil’s wife). The Duquemin wives were also involved in the family business doing the wages and accounts. This is a precedent that continues to this day.
At this time, it cost just £525 to construct a new house in Le Friquet.
